4 401 m2
The volume is designed as a free-standing element, which doesn’t correspond to difficult composition of surrounding elements. Compact cylindric volume doesn’t form enclosed spaces. The building is situated as close as possible to the existing building, nevertheless, new volume doesn’t block it. In the compact cylinder vertical and horizontal connections are close and complemented by open flowing spaces.
The integrity of the volume is maintained by using solid material. Windows create neat pattern, which overlay whole cylinder. Monotonous rhythm is intervened by entrance and playground niches or merged windows.
New wing occupies south-east side of the site. Existing path going from Didlaukio street to the Faculty of Health care remains. It is enhanced by a newly formed square in front of designed building. The square is universal recreational space, where the main entrance and outside café spaces are accessed.
In this territory terrain has difference of 3.5m, thus part of the new volume is deepened and in the eastern part of the site service access is formed. To enhance the perimeter of the site, the row of the trees is designed, along the Didlaukio street.
Structure of the building
The building is four-story high and every floor is accommodating different functional program.
First floor – entrance hall with information centre, café, skylight at the core of the volume. Behind the vertical skylight – auditoriums. At the eastern part of the building children care centre with a playground in the niche is designed.
Second floor – library reading room, group and individual work rooms, seminar rooms. On this floor flying glass bridge is designed too – warm connection with an existing building.
Third floor – auditoriums floor. Here auditoriums and seminar rooms of various size are arranged with a possibility to transform and merge.
In the centre of fourth floor courtyard with wooden deck, benches and greenery is inserted. All of the surrounding administrational premises open up to the yard. Also, conference hall with separated lobby is designed on the fourth floor.
Socle part is well illuminated, library workers’ and auxiliary rooms are located here. In the centre of the floor – storage rooms. In the underground part – student cloakrooms and technical rooms.
At the opposite sides (south and north) of the cylinder, vertical connections, auxiliary rooms and toilets are placed.
