Problem

Sakiai town square is a place that no longer has its former meaning. The most important urban areas are located in other places. The reasons preventing the square from being attractive today are: the lack of safety and the excessive noises due to the high traffic flow around the square, functional and visual separation from other urban spaces, paths and institutions, lack of
individuality in the context of city spaces. It is possible to revive square for a new life only by linking it with the city’s urban drawing, which in the last century has changed in many ways.
Public space is attractive if there are people. In order to revive the square, the main goals should be: to create a safe, comprehensible and recognizable space, and to see and design the space trying to make it unique, avoiding to repeat the purpose and appearance of other public spaces.

The idea – a square surrounded by greenery

We noticed that the neighboring urban spaces are characterized by different content, but the common denominator: a lake surrounded by greenery, a meadow surrounded by greenery (Lingio Park), the river is surrounded by greenery (Siesartis coast, the future recreation area). When creating another space, we followed this regularity – creating a square that is surrounded by greenery.

We choose the square, because it has the most representative image of all public spaces. Also, because there was a square long time ago. The square here could no longer be the same as it was a century ago with the church, market and water pump. We offer only associate memory symbols and exposition of historical objects. However, as in the old days, various events can take place here.

Measures

In the space we offer to introduce three composite elements: a stripe, a hill and a fragment of an old paving.

The stripe

The stripe is a square pavement, the drawing which has similarity to the fabric typical in the Zanavykai region. An important feature of the square is the lake and V. Kudirka monument: the square is visually connected to the lake; the water is visible from the main square and the square is visible from the lake. The main vertical accent of the square is the large oak, brightly lit by lamps during the dark.

The hill

The hill stretches alongside Kestucio street, highlights the characteristic feature of the relief and suppresses the noise coming from the street. The hillside facing the street is planted with flowers. The other side of the hill is facing the square – here is an interior space under the flower roof: a small cafe – the tables are pulled out to the square during the warm season, also tourist information center next to the exposition space. The light coming from the room though the glass wall, which separates inside space and the square, overlooks the long edge of the square in the evening, and the objects inside are clearly visible. Part of the glass wall is filled with exposition about the history of the region.

The fragment of the old paving

Near the crossroads of Kestutis and Birute streets, after further research, a fragment of the former square pavement is restored. In this part of area, a laconic vertical accent – a fountain – a sign of former pump could appear. Scrubs alongside Kestucio street reduces traffic noise. In the sequel to the new square pavement (stripe), a smaller local historical space is formed. These two parts of the square together form a representative chain, which becomes an important part of the city’s cognitive recreational – historical ring (Centras – Lingis Park – Lake Sakiai – the former historic square – Siesartis coastal park – the Center).
